CINAHL Search Tips

ALWAYS

  • Start searching with CINAHL Ultimate alone (not multiple databases)
    • better limit functions
    • links to articles cited by and newer articles citing the articles
  • Use the advanced search option
    • additional limit options, including "research articles"
  • Limit by published date.
    • You only need to add the earliest year you can use (for example 2015) in the first block.
  • Research Article: checkbox
    • This is a great way to limit to research articles so that you don't see editorials and position papers.
  • Save (and proofread) APA format citations from the article description page or the email articles page.

IF NEEDED

  • MyEBSCOhost to save articles (and searches) if you can't finish all of your research at one time.
    • Click on "Sign in" to find out more about MyEBSCOhost and create your account.
  • Search tips
    • Browse Subjects listed under each article for new key words to try
    • Use or to search for articles with all related terms
      • for example: "shift reports" or "hand off"
  • Additional advanced search limits: Add one at a time until you get a good list of results.
    • Journal Subset: Nursing
      •  if you find (or expect to find) too many articles on the topic that are not from a nursing perspective
    • Any Author is a Nurse: check box
      •  if you find (or expect to find) too many articles on the topic that are not from a nursing perspective and the Journal Subset Nursing limit didn't work well
    • Age Groups
      • to limit to a particular population when there is enough research that closely matches your needs
    • Language:  English
      • Removes articles that are not in English (up to 10% on average).
    • Number of Pages: Greater than 2
      • if you are seeing too many research abstracts rather than full articles on your topic.

NOT RECOMMENDED

  • Geography / Geographic Subset:
    • limits to where the journal is published, not by the location of the researcher or research
  • Multiple additional search limits
    • too many limits result in missing important research articles
