Cataloging Department Mission Statement

            The prime area mission of the Oklahoma City University Law Library is to serve the research and academic needs of the faculty and students of the Oklahoma City University School of Law.   The Law Library also supports the research efforts of the Oklahoma City University faculty, staff and students.  In addition, the library provides access to legal materials to the local bar and the general public.

            The Oklahoma City University Law Library Cataloging Department supports the Library’s mission by organizing and maintaining collections in the library, for optimal access and use by the legal, scholarly, and research community at Oklahoma City University and beyond.

            Drawing upon their skills and expertise, members of the Department analyze materials to create and maintain bibliographic and authority records according to national standards, and physically prepare and preserve these materials for use.  Members of the Department make efficient and innovative use of available tools, equipment, and technologies, and of the global information network.

            All members strive to create an environment that values each employee by encouraging and recognizing high performance, facilitating effective communication at all levels, and fostering team or through development and empowerment of the individual.

            The primary goal of the Catalog Department is to guide the library users, through the technique of cataloging and classification, to the volumes of law and related materials in the Oklahoma City University Law Library collection.

            It is the responsibility of the Catalog Department to catalog and classify without reasonable delay all library materials, to provide and maintain the online catalog (Voyager), to updates subject headings and other cross references in Voyager to facilitate ease of access, to recatalog and/or reclassify old titles to achieve unity throughout the collection, and to assist and counsel library staff and patrons in the use of catalog tools.

Departmental functions

  • Creating means of access to domestic, foreign, and international legal information and our special collections for the law school community
  • Providing descriptive and subject cataloging for every title
  • Assigning classification numbers and location to every title
  • Providing as many access points for the title as feasible (including adding table of contents
  • Responding to urgent calls for rush cataloging of materials
