The ProQuest "How To" for finding exactly what you need!
When performing an advanced search under Congressional publications, keep in mind that the date will default to the previous two years. If you need material prior to that, you will need to change the dates.
This is the ProQuest Congressional main cover page. On this page, there are multiple search functions you can pick from. You can select a basic search (which is the default search bar in the top central part of the page) or an advanced search (see Advanced Searches box below). Below the ProQuest Congressional banner, you can search for Congressional Publications, Members & Committees, Regulations, and News & Social Media. You can also select searches based on particular items by looking at the options immediately below the default search bar. First, you can search for compiled legislative histories using either the Public Law Number or Keyword search functions. Second, you can search using a Bill Number. Third, you can search for Committee Hearings and Testimony. Other options include searching for Members of Congress as well as searching Social Media. There are additional search options and you should take the time to check them out but the ones listed hereinabove are the most pertinent for the purposes of this guide.
If you want to do an advanced search, you can limit you searches to certain categories (Committee Prints, Hearings, House & Senate Documents, House & Senate Reports, Legislative Histories, Serial Set Maps, and the Serial Set).
Additionally, you can restrict the search by Congress or by Date. This option is near the bottom of the page.
ProQuest's left hand menu also gives you the option to Search By Number. This option allows you to search by Bill Number, Public Law Number, Statute at Large, etc. When searching by bill and public law number be sure to select the correct number of Congress (e.g. 113 for the Congress of 2013 to 2014). Additionally, for bills you will need to know whether the bill was originated in the House of Representatives (H.R.) or Senate (S.) - There are also options for joint resolutions, etc.
If you need information about members of Congress, demographics, or committees, you can click on the "Members & Committees" tab. You can enter in the person's name and then search for bills that person has sponsored, floor statements, floor votes, and find that member's personal profile.
Once you search the name a results page will appear. Browse through the results until you find the congressional members you are looking for. After you locate the individual you are looking for click their name. A new window will appear. In this new window is a centrally located (on the page) list of that congressional member's legislative actions and personal information. All of this information can be easily searched through quick browsing of that member's Personal Info, Committee Assignments, Bills Sponsored, Floor Statements, Floor Votes, and Social Media.
You can also search the Code of Federal Regulations and the Federal Register on ProQuest Congressional. With the Regulations search option you can enter your search terms, restrict by agency name, by agency action type, and restrict by date.
