Texas Legal Research: Texas Legislative History

Getting Started

Legislative history research is important for interpreting statutory language that may be vague and to determine the legislative intent behind the law.  Researchers should be familiar with the legislative process, know the types of documents that are created, and know where those documents can be located.

Resources

The Texas Legislative Council has a diagram showing the legislative process in Texas.  There are also detailed descriptions about how the legislative process works in Texas.

The Legislative Reference Library of Texas is also a valuable resource.  There is a guide to Compiling Texas Legislative History on its website that can provide assistance to researchers.

Research Guides and LibGuides for Texas Legislative History Research
