Nuclear Medicine: Introduction to U.S. & International Regulations and Clinical Practice Resources: Getting Started

Purpose

The primary purpose of this guide is to provide an overview of legal and medical resources about Nuclear Medicine.  Background information explaining the specialty is included for those unfamiliar with Nuclear Medicine. U.S. and international regulations, as well as other legal resources, are provided for attorneys and regulators.  Selected clinical practice resources are included for medical practitioners.  Nuclear Medicine practitioners, technologists, and scientists may find this compilation helpful. As one of the smallest specialties, nuclear medicine is not well recognized or understood by many inside and outside of medicine. Clinical and legal guides for Nuclear Medicine are scarce. This guide is intended to help fill that knowledge gap by providing a broad spectrum of information sources. This guide is not intended to be a comprehensive review of all available resources.

The most authoritative resources for clinical nuclear medicine include special reports of expert panels, practice guidelines promulgated by professional societies, accreditation standards, peer-reviewed journals, and books by recognized experts.  Additionally, state, federal, and international regulations govern the handling and use of radioactive materials that are used in Nuclear Medicine.
