Library Staff Resources: Policies

DO NOT accept payment for fines under $5.00. All fines under $5.00 are forgiven at the end of each semester.

• Overdue fines (high need items only)
  • 50 cents per day
    • recalled items
    • interlibrary loan items
    • daily reserve items
  • 1 cent per hour
    • room keys
    • cords, cables, headphones...
    • hourly reserve items
  • $2.00 per day
    • tablet computers
• Processing fees and replacement costs assessed when 90 days overdue
  • Processing $15 per item, in addition to overdue or replacement costs
    • students and courtesy card holders owe processing even when the book has been returned
    • waive for faculty/staff (when returned or when paying for a lost book)
  • Replacement cost (original purchase price, current replacement cost, or $50)
    • forgive if the item is returned (WMS should do this automatically)
    • faculty and staff normally pay this, but are not required to. Contact the library director about removing the fee if requested.

Library Policies are currently included in Word documents in the DulaneyBrowne Library Staff SharePoint site. OCU login may be required to access files.

Food and Drink

• The library café includes vending machines for soft drinks and snacks.
• Soft drinks, snacks, and hot drinks may be consumed in any part of the building.
• However, please avoid aromatic foods and keep liquids away from computers.
• Please be considerate and immediately report spills or any other problems to a library staff member.
• Please, no meals except for meetings!

Noise Levels:

• Group Study: 4th floor, 4th & 5th floor study rooms - group work encouraged
• Quiet Study: 1st, 2nd, & 5th floors - quiet talking permitted
• Silent Study: 3rd floor & 3rd floor study rooms - no talking, no cell phones (rooms included)

• At least one full time circulation staff member or Lead Student should be assigned to provide customer service at the desk at all times.  
• Staff members at the desk should acknowledge patrons as they enter the library and as they approach the desk.
• Staff members should strive to assure that all library visitors have a positive experience and leave with the information they need.
• Staff members should work on projects at the desk if the traffic is slow, but never on projects that require concentrated attention.

Customer service at the desk may be delegated to a student worker, but the circulation staff member should remain in the area to answer questions and provide support as needed. Listening library service is generally delegated to listening library student workers. The circulation staff member assigned to provide customer service at the main circulation desk is also available for these students via the telephone.
