Meta Sites and Portals

LLRX provides a portal to federal and state court rules, forms, and dockets from around the country.

The National Center for State Courts provides links to state court web sites which often contain the text of court rules.

Federal Court Rules

Federal court rules consist of the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure codified at Titles 28 and 18 of the United States Code, respectively.  Federal rules also include the Rules of the Supreme Court, Rules of Appellate Procedure, and rules adopted by individual courts as local court rules.  For a list of all federal rules and their locations, see Cohen, Morris L., How to Find the Law (West:  St. Paul, 1989) Call # KF 240 .C538, p. 310.

United States Code provides the text of the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure with advisory committee comments.  Call # KF 62, Microforms AA 362.

United States Code Annotated, Call # KF 62.5 .W45 and United States Code Service, Call # KF 62.5 .L38 both provide the text of the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure with annotations to cases and secondary sources.

United States Supreme Court Digest Lawyers Edition, (volumes 17-22) contains the text of all major rules and annotations to Supreme Court decisions interpreting rules.

Cornell's Legal Information Institute provides the text of the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure, Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure, Federal Rules of Evidence, and the Federal Rules of Bankruptcy Procedure. 

The United States Courts website provides links to the websites of individual courts where the text of local court rules may often be found.

Point to Remember

Learn about changes to federal rules by monitoring the advance sheets of West's Federal Court Reporters.  Update the rules by running them through Shepard's or Key Cite.
